Describe your experience with Battle or Barkada in general. What is the cultural significance of Barkada?

This was my first experience in cultural dancing! It was as intensive and stressful as it usually is, but what got me through was the bonds I made with my overall section. Dancing with the Villager girls was just as fun as I expected, but I didn’t anticipate how much I enjoyed helping the Villager boys!! I’m still so proud of the progress the Villager boys made from day one. Villagers for lyfe.

In a predominately white institution, the importance of practicing cultural dancing runs deeper than just representing our culture. Historically, the goal of imperialist colonialism has been to erase Filipino history, so to still be dancing with the intention of staying true to our roots is a strong statement that we are still here. It’s no small feat; we owe it to the peoples now gone, as well as to our ancestors, to keep going. And then to have brought Princess Urduja’s story to life… just as powerful. Women are strong and so are the hearts of Filipinos.

To PSA, Barkada has been a thread that has kept our members tied together. While upperclassmen will disappear to further their studies and career goals, they always come back to Barkada. There’s truly no experience like this outside of the university and I think we’ve all come to realize that.

Barkada has only enhanced my PSA experiences in the most positive of ways. I’m so glad to have done it this year, despite my busy schedule and the outcome. It was so rewarding to have performed Princess Urduja’s story as one family.

Sonica and here adings at Reveal Night.
